The former girlfriend of Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid, broke her silence after he admitted to cheating on her during a live TV interview at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics on Tuesday.
“It’s hard to forgive,” the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told Norwegian tabloid VG on Wednesday. “Even after a declaration of love in front of the whole world.”
Laegreid made his confession when speaking with Norwegian broadcaster NRK moments after winning a bronze medal in the men’s 20km individual event.
“Six months ago I met the love of my life. The world’s most beautiful and nicest person,” he said, via The Associated Press and The Guardian, while fighting back tears. “And three months ago I made the mistake of my life and cheated on her, and I told her about that a week ago. This has been the worst week of my life.
“I had the gold medal in life, and I am sure there are many people who will see things differently, but I only have eyes for her. Sport has come second these last few days. Yes, I wish I could share this with her.”
After winning bronze at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Sturla Holm Lægreid explains why he chose to publicly admit cheating on his girlfriend, saying he wanted to try everything and not look back feeling like he hadn’t done enough.
The woman said she remains upset about the situation Laegreid created.
“I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it,” she said. “We have had contact, and he is aware of my opinions on this.”
Laegreid told VG that his TV interview may not have been the right time or platform to make his admission.
“I deeply regret that I brought up this personal story on what was a joyous day for Norwegian biathlon,” he said. “I am not quite myself today, and I am not thinking clearly.”
Laegreid earned his first individual Olympic medal on Wednesday to go with a relay gold medal from the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
