What to Know
- A blizzard warning is in effect for all five boroughs of New York City, Long Island, and much of NJ, as a classic nor’easter wallops our area with strong winds and heavy snow.
- A blizzard warning is issued when there are sustained winds of 35 mph or more, plus visibility of a 1/4 mile or less from blowing snow, and those conditions persist for at least three hours. That creates dangerous whiteout conditions
- The forecast shows 12-18 inches of snow expected for NYC, along with central Jersey and Nassau County. Some farther out on Long Island may get as much as two feet.
- States of emergency are in effect for New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, as well as New York City; we could be looking at up to 4 inches of snow an hour at times
- LIRR suspended train service overnight and will remain that way until further notice; NJ Transit suspended bus, rail and light rail services Sunday night.
- New York City schools get a traditional snow day on Monday, Mayor Mamdani announced. He’ll make a decision about Tuesday at a later time.
Millions of people in New York City and the rest of the tri-state are stuck home under travel bans and blizzard warnings as a fierce winter storm slams the region with heavy snow and high winds.
Cellphones across NYC received wailing push alerts Sunday night announcing a ban on non-emergency travel on all streets through noon Monday because of “dangerous blizzard conditions.” New Jersey implemented similar restrictions. Even DoorDash shut down in New York City.
