An elementary school in one of New Jersey’s wealthiest communities will not be renamed for President Donald Trump, after a school district rejected a board member’s proposal to even consider the idea.
A Colts Neck school board member, Robert Scales, earlier this month pitched the idea of forming an exploratory committee to change the name of Conover Road Primary School to Donald J. Trump Primary School.
He pointed to schools elsewhere in the country named after former President Barack Obama, and, at that March 4 meeting, said the president had contributed a “great deal of time” to the town of Colts Neck.
While some board members liked the idea, the suggestion became the subject of debate locally and fodder for late-night television, including “Saturday Night Live.”
The school board president announced on Wednesday that it wouldn’t move forward with the proposal.
She didn’t appear to explain the precise reason the board wouldn’t consider it. At that meeting, she also apologized to Scales for the proposal getting “blown out of proportion,” News 12 reported.
