On Tuesday, 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez faced several charges, including murder, in connection with the killing of seven-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore in Brooklyn.
“It wasn’t my fault, I didn’t pull the trigger,” Rodriguez told reporters, his head bowed.
He is one of two suspects charged with the murder of seven-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore.
Rodriguez, 18, faces several charges, including murder and attempted murder.
Authorities say Rodriguez was driving the scooter on which 21-year-old Amuri Greene was also riding when Greene opened fire.
Rodriguez appeared in court a day after the funeral of Patterson-Moore, who died from a stray bullet.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said it was heartbreaking to have to bury a baby.
“Every day a new theory emerges about why this happened, but what we must focus on is getting these guns off the streets,” the prosecutor said.
According to González, his office will make an announcement on Wednesday regarding intervention efforts to curb gun violence among young people.
Wednesday will also be another key day in court, as Amuri Greene will be formally charged.
The investigation revealed that the defendants fled the scene on a scooter, which collided with a vehicle while traveling the wrong way on a one-way street and crashed a few blocks from the shooting site. Greene was apprehended shortly afterward, and Rodríguez was later arrested in Pennsylvania.
