One person was killed and three others injured — including a 13-year-old — after a mass shooting in Paterson, New Jersey Saturday evening, a city official confirmed. The gunfire left people scrambling for help, as surveillance video showed the chaos.
The shooting happened at East 29th Street and 10th Avenue in Paterson. Video obtained by NBC New York showed the aftermath. A man frantically called for help as three people were on the ground. One person stayed motionless as another struggled to make it to his feet.
“I heard a lot. I heard a lot,” one man working nearby told News 4. What he heard was a series of loud gunshots echo through the air. Video obtained by News 4 includes what sounds like more than a dozen shots being fired. Witnesses say what happened next was mayhem as people rushed to aid those who were wounded.
“A lot of gunshots, a lot of shots. People (saying) he shot the guy,” said the man. “People was screaming. People was crying.”
Most of the victims are believed to be in their 20s, along with the 13-year-old who was injured, said City Council member Luis Velez. He says what led to the shooting is under investigation, but added that the area is known to be a hot spot for trouble. “Warm weather is coming out. People probably have a beef. They bring it to the street, and then innocent people probably get involved,” he told reporters.
The three surviving victims, including the boy, are being treated at a hospital. It’s unclear if any of those victims were targets of that shooting, or if it was gang-related, as police continue to investigate.
