A 20-year-old man has been arrested on charges including assault, child endangerment, and reckless driving in connection with a crash on the Grand Central Parkway last month.
Three passengers were trapped inside. Flames were intense.
Now, the NYPD is releasing bodycam footage showing the dramatic rescues.
According to the New York State Police, which first came upon the scene, troopers were patrolling the highway near exit 11 toward Queens. It was around 1:10 a.m. on March 22 that State Police saw a tan Infiniti that had collided with a tree and was fully engulfed in flames.
“We got one person pinned right now,” one first responder says as another douses the flaming car with a fire extinguisher. The swooshing of spray and smoke is audible on the bodycam. Car windows are smashed.
“Who else is in there? Get out of the car! Start climbing,” a first responder tells the passengers.
Video shows people being hauled out of windows.
The driver had already gotten out of the vehicle by the time State Police happened upon the fire, officials say. He suffered serious injuries.
Officers with the NYPD who were in the area stopped to assist the rescue effort, and they, along with New York State Police troopers, safely removed the three trapped passengers.
All four people who had been in the car were taken to hospitals for treatment. The extent of injuries to the passengers wasn’t immediately clear early Tuesday, but it appears they are expected to survive.
A State Police investigation determined the Infiniti driver’s actions allegedly led to the crash.
He was arraigned last week on multiple misdemeanor violations.
