A house fire in Newark overnight claimed the life of a woman and critically injured two others, authorities said Saturday.
Firefighters were called to 282 Schley Street around 3:00 a.m., said Essex Co. Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda.
The name of the woman who was killed has not been released. She was pronounced dead at Newark Beth Israel Hospital. Two other people are reported to be in criticial condition.
Intense flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the home, with the fire so hot that it melted the siding of a neighboring home.
The Red Cross is helping three families affected by the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
