A significant Green Line shutdown starts Wednesday

An MBTA suspension between Kenmore and Boston College will bring shuttle buses and reduced service through April 30.

The MBTA will suspend the Green Line B branch service between Kenmore and Boston College for nine days starting Wednesday, transit officials announced.

Free shuttle buses will replace train service from Wednesday, April 22, to Thursday, April 30, though they will not stop at Griggs Street, Allston Street, and Packard’s Corner due to accessibility constraints, officials said.

Riders should expect longer trips when using shuttle buses. The MBTA said a trip from Boston College to Park Street could take at least 10 additional minutes.

During the weekend of April 25-26, the suspension will expand to Copley, with reduced Green Line frequency between Copley and Government Center, according to the MBTA.

Officials are encouraging riders to use the Orange Line at Back Bay as an alternative for travel through downtown Boston. Riders can also walk a quarter-mile between Back Bay and Copley, roughly a five-minute trip.

Free Route 57 bus service will provide additional coverage between Kenmore and Packard’s Corner April 22-24 and April 27-30, the MBTA said. However, transit officials advised against using it during the weekend of April 25-26 when Green Line service is fully suspended at Kenmore.

MBTA officials said the closure will allow crews to complete a series of infrastructure upgrades, including installing the Green Line Train Protection System and replacing the 130-year-old wooden overhead catenary wire “trough” near Green Line portals, along with other maintenance work.
