The Alex Bregman free agency sweepstakes dominated headlines last offseason. He eventually signed with the Boston Red Sox on a short-term deal with opt-outs and a high average annual value.
Bregman opted out of his deal with Boston and entered free agency again this winter, reigniting the sweepstakes that dominated headlines last winter. This offseason, Bregman’s top suitors are seemingly the Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Detroit Tigers.
SportsGrid’s Paul Connor predicted Bregman would return to the Red Sox on a huge deal in the coming months.
“Solid .273/.360/.462 with 18 HR in 114 games despite quad injury; plus defender with steady production, but age and injury history temper long-term upside,” Connor wrote.
Bregman was one of the best players in the American League when he was healthy last season. The Tigers and Cubs could make serious attempts at him in free agency, just like they did last winter, but the Red Sox seemingly control their own destiny with Bregman.
Landing Bregman on a new deal would be the ideal solution for Boston. It wouldn’t need to give up top prospects for a player like Ketel Marte. It also wouldn’t be taking a downgrade like adding Eugenio Suárez.
Bregman is a leader and fan favorite in Boston. The Red Sox should be willing to pay him as such this offseason.
