Boston Red Sox
Cora posted a smiling photo of himself and other fired assistant coaches on social media in the early morning hours.
The Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world by mass-firing the majority of its major league coaching staff Saturday evening.
Manager Alex Cora, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, and three hitting coaches got the axe following the team’s 17-1 afternoon rout of the Baltimore Orioles. Game planning and run prevention coordinator Jason Varitek will have a “new role” in the organization, per the team release.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak and marked Boston’s 10th victory of the season.
Such a large coaching exodus in April, including the manager, is unprecedented. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, for example, called the move “an absolute shocker” during Fox’s baseball broadcast.
Cora doesn’t seem to be too taken aback by the news, however.
Cora, who managed into his eighth season with the Red Sox this year, shared a simple message on X overnight:
“Happy!” he said, with a smiling emoji, at 4:12 a.m. Eastern Time.
Varitek, however, is seen giving a thumbs-down, but still smiling.
Cora attached a song to the photo: “Amor y Control” by Ruben Blades. The song title translates to “love and control” in English.
Themes within the song appear to be love, family, and dealing with life challenges.
Cora has spoken at length about putting his family first, including his two school-aged twin boys, when making professional decisions. When Cora signed his last contract extension with the Red Sox mid-season in 2024, he mentioned his family in his press conference.
“There were two things that I wanted: I wanted to win, and I wanted security for my family. And we have accomplished both,” Cora said at the time.
Cora was asked about his future with the Red Sox during spring training this year, specifically about what his plans were once his deal expired following the 2027 season. His family came up in his answer, as per usual when discussing his career.
“Honestly, we’re in a good spot. I think the family is happy and things here look tremendous, right?” Cora told The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham in March.
Cora’s professional future isn’t immediately clear. There are no current MLB managerial openings, and whether or not he wants to work in a front office role isn’t publicly known.
Cora worked for ESPN as a baseball color analyst from 2013-16 after his playing career.
