Bottles of essential oil being sold on Amazon have been recalled because the packaging is not child-resistant and poses a risk of poisoning, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The CPSC said bottles of Gumili Beauty GM Gumili Wintergreen Essential Oil were being recalled due to the “risk of serious injury or death from child poisoning” by methyl salicylate, which must be in child-resistant packaging, as required by the Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA).
Newsweek has contacted Amazon and Gumili Beauty for comment in emails sent outside regular working hours.
What To Know
The recalled essential oil was sold in amber glass bottles with a black screw-on cap and a white label featuring the “GM” logo, “gumili” and “wintergreen essential oil”—with packaging that included a white box with blue text and a black dropper cap, according to the CPSC notice.
About 2,970 units were recalled in the United States, and no incidents or injuries had been reported at the time of the announcement, the agency said.
The products were sold on Amazon.com by Gumili Beauty from October 2023 through November 2025 for about $8, according to the recall listing.
The retailer was listed as Guangzhou Feifan Kuajing Supply Chain Co. Ltd., doing business as Gumili Beauty of China, and the product was manufactured in China, the CPSC reported.
The PPPA requires certain substances to be in special packaging that is designed to be significantly difficult for children under 5 years of age to open within a reasonable time and not difficult for adults to use properly.
Household substances can include a hazardous substance, food, drugs, cosmetics or substances intended for use as fuel when stored in a portable container, according to the CPSC.
“Since the regulation has been in effect, there have been remarkable declines in reported deaths from ingestions by children of toxic household products including medications,” the CPSC said on its website.
What Happens Next
Consumers should immediately secure the recalled oil out of the sight and reach of children and contact Gumili Beauty for a full refund or a free replacement bottle, according to the recall instructions.
To obtain a remedy, the company asked consumers to photograph the product in the trash and email the image to gumilius@outlook.com to receive a refund or replacement, the CPSC said.
Consumers can contact Gumili Beauty toll-free at 800-343-1580 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday or by email at gumilius@outlook.com for additional information.
