San Diego fighters rained punches and reigned supreme at a special hometown boxing card Saturday night in Oceanside’s Frontwave Arena.
“SD Fight Night: Family Business” was highlighted by cousins Jonny Mansour and Julius “Ju Ju” Ballo, who self-promoted the event and won their fights. The event was available on pay per view and streaming services and attracted more than 4,500 fans to the arena.
In a video shown before he walked to the ring, Mansour dedicated his fight to his mother, who passed away two years ago.
After the video played, fans chanted his name as Mansour went to work against lightweight William King, delivering a series of punches at King that backed him up against the ropes.
Throughout the 8-round fight, an aggressive Mansour unleashed punches that kept King in the corner. Mansour (now 7-0) went on to win a unanimous decision.
“What better way to do it than in my hometown of San Diego,” he told the crowd.
Ballo was equally up to the task, dancing his way to victory and firing off clean shots at Roman Reyes in their super featherweight match. Ballo (3-0) also won a unanimous decision and told the crowd, “This is only the beginning.”
Ten of the 11 fights on the card featured San Diego-area boxers, and all but one of them had successful evenings.
Vista’s Franklin Garcia (2-0) won his welterweight fight with a first-round knockout of Rahmel McKinley (1-3).
Angel De La Cruz Ramirez of San Diego had a memorable pro debut, scoring a second round TKO over fellow lightweight Antonio Sosa (1-1) when the referee stopped the fight after Sosa absorbed some heavy punches.
Chula Vista’s John Ornelas (6-2-1) defeated Brandon Mendoza (6-12) in their welterweight match.
Welterweight Kyle Erwin, introduced as the “fighting pride of Oceanside,” scored a fifth round TKO over Jose Marruffo (15-20-2).
“I want to thank everybody for coming to support me,” Erwin (11-3) told the crowd after his hand was raised.
Super Bantamweight Richard Fernandez (5-0) won a unanimous decision over Sugary Montales (6-3).
Angel Estrada (12-2-1) was knocked down in the first round by Pedro Angel Cruz (6-6), leading the referee to declare a knockout and stop the fight.
In an exciting super welterweight bout, Angel Munoz (9-2) of Oceanside won a unanimous decision against Cruz Becerra (3-2).
Welterweight Daniel Morales (9-0) poured it on in the final round and won a six-round unanimous decision against Tijuana’s Alejandro Quintana (7-1-1).
