Last Saturday, the first era of Josh Allen’s career in the NFL came to an end.
After he had one of his self-proclaimed worst games in the playoffs, putting the blame on himself for the team’s elimination by Denver, he was hit with another gut punch.
The only head coach he’s ever known in the pros, Sean McDermott, had been fired.
Allen had no warning or input on the decision, leaving him shellshocked with the rest of the Buffalo Bills team.
Although he was left out of the decision to remove McDermott, Allen is reported to have a new role as the Bills head into the offseason searching for their next head coach.

Per The Athletic’s senior NFL insider Dianna Russini, the reigning MVP will have a say in who will be leading him and the Bills heading into the 2026 campaign.
Allen will be “sitting in” on the in-person facility interviews that are scheduled over the weekend with Buffalo, as a slew of franchises have already signed their team leaders.
For Buffalo, it appears paramount that Allen wants to work with whoever they hire, as rumors and whispers of the star QB wishing to win a championship over everything else have grown louder since their elimination. If it isn’t in Buffalo, there are 20-plus teams who’d trade everything they have to bring Allen into their building.
Mike McDaniel, Grant Udinski, Anthony Lynn, and Anthony Weaver are the names Allen is expected to meet this weekend in Buffalo, per Russini.
Whichever leading candidate is chosen will have gigantic shoes to fill in Buffalo, where McDermott kept the team as a perennial contender throughout his tenure. He left the team with an overall record of 106-58, a stat line that generally gives a coach a raise rather than the boot.
While the two conference championships play out on Sunday, Allen will be doing his part to make sure he’s the one playing out there in a year.
Who will be alongside Allen? That decision, unlike the firing, will be partly his.
