The Buffalo Bills made a bold move on Monday, following their playoff loss to the Denver Broncos over the weekend, by firing head coach Sean McDermott.
McDermott took over the role in 2017 and helped lead the Bills back to relevancy, claiming five AFC East titles and compiling a 98‑50 record over his tenure.
However, he was just 8‑8 in the postseason, falling short of a Super Bowl appearance on multiple occasions. This year, in particular, seemed like the perfect opportunity for the Bills to carve out their path, with no Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Joe Burrow standing in their way — but they simply couldn’t get it done.

With McDermott now gone, Bills general manager Brandon Beane will lead the search for a new head coach. According to ESPN’s Peter Schrager, there are already two “obvious” candidates to watch, along with one potentially flying under the radar.
Schrager identifies current Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady — who has already interviewed for multiple head coaching positions around the league—as one candidate to watch. The other is former Bills OC and recently fired New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, who enjoyed significant success during his time in Buffalo working with star quarterback Josh Allen.
The name Schrager singled out as a potential under-the-radar option is Davis Webb, Allen’s former teammate in Buffalo and current passing game coordinator and QB coach for the Denver Broncos.
Webb doesn’t have any head coaching experience, but having worked closely with Sean Payton over the past three seasons could accelerate that development.
Buffalo now arguably has the most attractive open head coaching job in the NFL, and Webb’s affinity for the Bills, along with his connection to Josh Allen, could work in his favor if he earns an interview.
“I love Buffalo, it’s my favorite place I’ve ever played,” Webb said. “My best friend is the starting quarterback over there.”
