The driver escaped unharmed after his car rolled into Sudbury River, authorities say.
A night of fishing ended with an unexpected recovery mission after a Subaru rolled into the Sudbury River Tuesday night.
Fire officials received a call around 8:15 p.m. reporting a car had entered the Sudbury River at Sherman’s Bridge, according to a statement from the Wayland Fire Department.
When crews arrived, officials found the Subaru approximately 200 feet downstream. It had briefly floated before sinking to the bottom, Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson told Boston.com.
The car’s occupant was not injured and safely exited the car before it entered the water, officials said.

McPherson said the man had been fishing and was sitting inside the car when a fishing pole alarm sounded. As he was checking it, the vehicle rolled into the river.
Because of darkness and the lack of immediate hazards, McPherson said they opted to wait until the morning to recover the submerged Subaru.
At about 9 a.m., Wayland firefighters and the District 14 dive team began recovery efforts, according to the department statement.
After more than two hours, McPherson said crews secured the car with a cable and pulled it from the river using a tow truck.
“It was a great collaboration with District 14 [and] our department to get that vehicle out safely,” he added.
The car was totaled, McPherson said.
“The good news is there really was minimal environmental impact as well, despite the fact the vehicle went in the river,” he said.
