The Los Angeles Chargers have plenty of money to spend, but have been suspiciously quiet during the start of NFL free agency. They made early moves to sign center Tyler Biadasz and bring back future Hall of Fame edge rusher Khalil Mack, but haven’t made a true splash addition that still seems possible given their cap space.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested the Chargers acquire another reliable weapon for quarterback Justin Herbert, who is still searching for his first playoff win. Knox picked out Jauan Jennings, arguably the wideout on the open market, as a potential fit with the Chargers’ offense.
Jennings, 28, hit free agency for the first time in his career after spending five seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. The former seventh-round pick quickly developed into a go-to target for quarterback Brock Purdy, acting as a security blanket on third downs and even being the second-leading receiver for the team in 2024. He made 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns that year.

The only issue is that Jennings may have overvalued himself on the open market, which is why he hasn’t come to a deal yet with a team. The 49ers were interested in retaining the receiver, but not at his price tag. The 6-foot-3 receiver has dealt with some injuries in his career, but he is a perfect target for a big-arm receiver like Herbert.
The Chargers have an edge because the new offensive coordinator was part of the decision to draft Jennings in 2021 when he held the same position with the 49ers. Mike McDaniel and Jennings worked together for one season in San Francisco before he became the head coach of the Miami Dolphins the following season.
Knox also mentions the Tennessee Titans as a potential landing spot for Jennings, thanks to his familiarity with former 49ers’ defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who is now leading the charge in Nashville.
If Jennings wants a chance to win right away and receive more touches, the Chargers might be the better choice. Los Angeles is consistently in playoff contention but hasn’t gotten over the hump yet. Plus, Keenan Allen has not been brought back yet in free agency by the Chargers, suggesting Jennings could take his place in the formation.
