A year‑old dog named Jon Snow is back in foster care after being found wandering alone inside a Home Depot in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, just weeks after his adoption from a shelter.
Jon Snow, described as a Lab mix, was discovered on Valentine’s Day by Kayla Winrow’s husband Grant, who spotted the dog roaming freely inside the hardware store, approaching customers and staff. The dog appeared unaccompanied and had no clear destination, according to those who encountered him.
“My husband, found him running around inside the hardware store ‘Home Depot,’” Winrow told Newsweek. “He was roaming alone and aimless, just happily approaching people.”
The discovery prompted Winrow, who is affiliated with the rescue organization We’re OK! Foundation, to begin looking into the dog’s background.
Through that process, she learned Jon Snow had first arrived at a local shelter in November after being found as a stray. At the time, he was wearing a collar with an AirTag duct‑taped to it, but shelter staff reported that no owner came forward during the two months he remained there.
After waiting at the shelter, Jon Snow was adopted in late January. However, just weeks later, he was again found alone—this time inside the Home Depot—raising questions about how he ended up back on the streets.
“He was adopted on January 29, and then found in Home Depot on Valentine’s Day,” Winrow said.
She was later able to track down the adopters, who told her the dog must have escaped. “They apparently lived in an apartment complex nearby and said he must have escaped,” she said, adding that the apartment did not have a yard. “I’m not sure how that’s possible.”
The adopters did not ask for Jon Snow to be returned to them. “They definitely never asked me if they could have him back,” she said.
After reviewing social media posts made by the adopters shortly before the dog was found, Winrow said the posts suggested they were struggling with training. “Based off of some social media posts that the previous owner made about him, it seemed they were struggling to teach him house, manners and showed some frustrations about it,” she said, noting that the posts were made just two days before her husband found the dog.
Jon Snow has since been taken into the We’re OK! Foundation rescue program and is currently being fostered. He is now available for adoption.
The foster caregiver described him as friendly and social, noting that during his time loose in the store, he appeared comfortable approaching people rather than fearful or aggressive.
For now, Jon Snow is back in a stable environment, with his foster family hoping his next adoption will be permanent.
