This week’s episode of Euphoria set up the true drama of the third and final season of HBO’s hit drama. But for viewers at home, Hans Zimmer‘s out-of-place soundtrack made it a difficult to focus on Nate (Jacob Elordi) getting his pinky toe cut off or Cassie’s (Sydney Sweeney) $50,000 worth of floral arrangements.
The Oscar-winning composer was set to score the HBO show alongside the show’s longtime composer, Labrinth. But Labrinth, who worked on the show’s first two seasons, seemingly exited the series with a cryptic social media post that read, “I’m done with this industry. Fuck Columbia. Double fuck ‘Euphoria.’ I’m out. Thank you and good night x.”
The composer later revealed that he “decided to remove whatever music I had in it.”
“I spoke to HBO, as far as I know, we are cool. I left because, last truth, when I work for someone, their vision is paramount to me, but I don’t let people treat me like shit,” he added, per Variety.
Instead of Labrinth’s stylish needle drops and timely musical picks that grounded the series as a moody teen drama, this dramatic season has been backed by several tranquil melodies fans are describing as “all inclusive resort elevator ass music.”

“Hans Zimmer going to hell for this damn score,” one fan complained.
Zimmer is mainly facing backlash for seemingly undermining Maddie’s (Alexa Demi) iconic entrance to Nate and Cassie’s wedding with his score. Maddie might be wearing what could only be described as the ultimate revenge dress, but the mood dissipates with Zimmer’s “alarm ringtone sounding soundtrack” that makes it sound like we’re “in a jungle,” as some fans put it.
The dramatic new episode brought Nate’s financial troubles to a head as he and Cassie get confronted during their wedding by the shady businessman he owes $550,000 to. Nate attempts to play it cool as he enjoys what he can from his wedding, which includes a surprisingly meaningful moment with Hunter Schafer’s Jules. But the newlyweds don’t even get to enjoy their wedding night when find Naz (Jack Topalian) waiting for them at home to issue a stern warning.
Euphoria Season 3 has taken the show in an entirely new direction. Picking up after a much-needed time jump, the HBO series follows this cast of beloved characters as they navigate being young adults trying to make a living for themselves. They’re all hustlers in their own way, much to their own detriment. But Zimmer’s score feels astoundingly out of place for a show that became famous for its gritty yet stylish aesthetic.
Perhaps, as one fan pointed out, it’s just not a good fit. “Really hate how this season of Euphoria has people hating Hans Zimmer when he’s a phenomenal artist for movie scores, his style just doesn’t fit with this show and that doesn’t mean it’s bad it’s just misplaced,” one viewer wrote on X.
Considering this is officially the last season of Euphoria, and Labrinth did not seem to end things on a good note with the show, it seems like Zimmer is here to stay for Euphoria‘s last hurrah.
New episodes of Euphoria air on HBO and HBO Max Sunday evenings at 9/8c.
