The Stars and Stripes will fly at half-staff across two states in America today after a nationwide alert over the weekend to honor those killed in the Pearl Harbor bombings.
Why It Matters
Flags in the United States are lowered to half-staff as a traditional sign of mourning or respect, typically following the death of notable public figures, officials, or as part of a national day of remembrance.
What To Know
Today, the state flags of Ohio and Wyoming are flown at half-staff in honor of individuals recognized for their service and impact on their communities, reflecting the continued importance placed on public service and civic contribution in American life.
Ohio
On Tuesday, December 9, Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio ordered the United States and state flags at all public buildings and grounds in Madison and Clark counties, as well as Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) facilities, to be flown at half-staff.
This order honors Lieutenant James “Bryan” White of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, who passed away after a career spanning the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and BCI, concluding with his work in the investigations division of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Other public buildings in Ohio may also lower their flags at their discretion for the same period, according to a press release.
Wyoming
In Wyoming, Republican Governor Mark Gordon ordered state and U.S. flags lowered through sundown on the date of interment (which remains to be announced) for former State Superintendent of Public Instruction Judy Catchpole.
Serving from 1995 to 2003, Catchpole led substantial reforms in Wyoming’s education system, including updates to academic standards, student assessments, teacher certification, and charter school policy.
She continued to advocate for educational causes through advisory boards and statewide initiatives after her official tenure, American Flags Express reports.
What People Are Saying
On Lieutenant James “Bryan” White’s death, Sheriff John Swaney said: “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Bryan after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lt. White’s family, friends and the men and women of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. His legacy of service, integrity, and dedication will never be forgotten.”
On Judy Catchpole’s passing, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon said: “Judy Catchpole devoted her life to Wyoming’s kids, and our state is better because of her steady leadership and wholehearted service. Jennie and I treasured our friendship with Judy and Glenn. We will miss her deeply and hold Glenn and their family in our prayers.”
What Happens Next
In Ohio, flags will be restored to full staff following the one-day observance on December 9, 2025. The specific duration for flag-lowering in Wyoming will be determined based on the date of Judy Catchpole’s interment, to be provided by her family.
