The last time former Los Angeles Chargers safety Nasir Adderly played a down in the NFL, Brandon Staley was the head coach, and he had just led the team to its second playoff appearance in nine seasons.
Adderly’s Chargers contract expired in March 2023, and he promptly announced his NFL retirement at the age of 25.
But just three years later, Adderly had a football itch he needed to scratch again.
The now-28-year-old defensive back signed a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday, ending his retirement just two months after announcing his desire to return to the NFL.
“It’s not been three years since I left the NFL, and I am extremely happy with my development,” Adderly posted on Instagram back in February. “Health, family, and entrepreneurship were my top priorities, and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish.
“The freedom to manage my own schedule was very important to me, but what I didn’t realize was how much I’d miss having football in my life. The competition, the brotherhood, and just being involved in the game that means so much to me and my family. Therefore, I’ am officially announcing my intention to return to the NFL.”
Adderly joins a defensive backfield that lost three key safeties in Nick Cross, Rodney Thomas II, and George Odum.
Cross was Indianapolis’ second-leading tackler (120) last season, and he contributed five tackles for loss, five passes defended, an interception, and a forced fumble.
Adderly will likely compete with former Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens and ex-Dallas Cowboy Juanyeh Thomas for playing time in the secondary.
