Fans have noticed some subtle tweaks to a few of the lyrics in Taylor Swift’s 2017 album, Reputation, and it’s got everybody asking if we are finally about to get a rerecording.
Overnight, the internet went into overdrive as Swifties spotted some notable changes to some of the songs in Reputation. Fans pointed out that the lyrics appear to have changed to her hit songs, “I Did Something Bad” and “Delicate,” but only on Apple Music so far.
When it was initially released, “I Did Something Bad” featured the lyrics, “If a man talks s***, then I owe him nothin’ / I don’t regret it one bit ’cause he had it comin’.”
However, as of December 12, Swifties have noticed that the lyric has been updated to: “If a man talks s***, then I owe him nothin’ / If he calls me a b**** then he had it coming.”
Additionally, “Delicate” also appears to have been reworked, replacing “Oh damn, never seen that color blue,” with “God damn, never seen that color blue.”
Newsweek has contacted a representative for Swift via email for comment.
Reputation, Swift’s sixth studio album, was released in 2017 and viewed as a real departure from her previous work. Both lyrically and aesthetically, the tone was much darker and almost vengeful, a real contrast to her picture-perfect pop songs of the past.
The album was released through Big Machine Records but is yet to be released as a rerecording. Is that about to change?
Needless to say, these tweaks have sent the internet into a frenzy.
Threads user @ijustwannachat posted that “REP TV IS HERE,” referring to the nickname for Reputation: Taylor’s Version. She went on to note that they are “simply replacing” tracks that were already out there, rather than being uploaded as separate tracks.
She also suggested that it sounds as if “So It Goes” has been reworked “in a really cool way.”
Another Threads user, @reneeroaming, said it’s “so suss” to update a few of the 2017 songs on the same day as Swift’s highly anticipated Disney+ docuseries is released. The show, titled “The End of an Era,” is a six-part series going behind the scenes of her record-breaking Eras Tour.
Indeed, Swift herself has been outpromoting the series this week. On December 10, she was a guest on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and fans think they might have spotted an Easter egg during the appearance.
Sunnie Cross on Threads (@sunless31) noted that Swift specifically mentioned the song, “Are You Ready For It?” during the interview, leading her to wonder if that was a pointed question aimed directly at her fans. Rather than just naming an absolute banger, was she asking if Swifties are actually ready for what she has next?
X user @cancelmyplanss suggested the lyrical change is a result of switching to Dolby Atmos on Apple Music.
Another excited Swiftie joked that “we are so back” with this update.
The singer certainly knows how to leave her fans guessing and asking “what in the Reputation is going on?”
