An already rocky start to the season for the 2026 Red Sox just hit another major bump.
The Red Sox announced on Wednesday afternoon that ace Garrett Crochet is being placed on the 15-day injured list due to left shoulder inflammation. Boston called up utility man Nate Eaton from Triple-A Worcester to take Crochet’s spot on the roster for now.
Much like the Red Sox roster as a whole, Crochet has had an uneven start to this season — posting a 3-3 record in his first six starts with a 6.30 ERA.
That unsightly ERA was inflated by a disastrous start on April 13, when he allowed 10 runs in just 1.2 innings against the Twins.
Despite Crochet’s struggles in that loss in Minnesota — including a dip in velocity — both Crochet and then-Red Sox manager Alex Cora insisted that the lefty was healthy.
The 26-year-old southpaw fared well in his last outing on Saturday against the Orioles, recording six shutout innings and seven strikeouts in Boston’s 17-1 win in Baltimore.
Speaking to MassLive’s Christopher Smith on Wednesday in Toronto, Crochet expressed confidence that he will be cleared to return after his two-week stint on the IL — citing fatigue more than pain or mechanical issues in his left shoulder.
“Just some fatigue I was feeling in my last start,” Crochet told Smith. “Was able to grind through it there at the end. It just makes more sense to get ahead of it now so I’m not playing catch-up the rest of the season.
“It’s tough. Talked to [Craig Breslow] and [head trainer] Brandon [Henry] yesterday about trying to push through and ultimately, what good is that doing for the team if I’m just kicking the can down the road?”
Crochet added that he’s still throwing during his IL stint and believes that the team is opting for a more cautious approach at this stage of the season.
“We saw some pretty good development over the course of the past three days,” Crochet told Smith. “The plan is just to continue to challenge it while also giving it time to recover.”
Boston’s pitching rotation has been stung by the injury bug over the first four-plus weeks of the 2026 season — with Sonny Gray, Kutter Crawford, Patrick Sandoval, and Johan Oviedo also on the IL.
Boston has yet to announce who will take Crochet’s place in the rotation going into a weekend series against the Astros at Fenway Park. Southpaw Jake Bennett — who was scratched from Triple-A Worcester’s rotation — could be in line to start on Friday in place of Crochet.
