The San Francisco Giants are seemingly preparing to chase down the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. This offseason, they’re going to need to make some big moves if they want to achieve this.
But before they could make a few big moves, they lost one of their young outfielders on waivers.
FanSided’s MLB insider, Robert Murray, reported on Monday that the Washington Nationals had claimed outfielder Joey Wiemer off waivers from the Giants. Wiemer was designated for assignment by the Giants.
Wiemer is a former top prospect with the Milwaukee Brewers, but his career hasn’t panned out at the highest level. But he’s only 26 years old, so his best days could still be ahead.
Wiemer is an excellent defender in the outfield. His defense could stick in any outfield in the league if his bat was able to keep up at the highest level. Unfortunately, his bat hasn’t been able to produce in the big leagues.
Either way, his power has never been in question. Wiemer is a true slugger with an incredible amount of raw power. He slugged 13 home runs in his rookie season with the Brewers.
Wiemer is seemingly going to get a better chance with the Nationals than he would have with the Giants. There’s a chance his raw tools stick at the big league level this year.
