High school student arrested in Lawrence after alleged assault during ‘senior assassin’ game

A high school student was arrested in Lawrence last week for an alleged assault linked to a “senior assassin” game, police said.

Three high school students told police that a person shot “BB-style projectiles” at them while they were on a run. Two of the teens were hit by the projectiles, the Lawrence Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

The teenagers did not report any serious injuries, Lawrence police said.

Police identified a high school student as a suspect and found an “Orbeez/gel projectile device” believed to be used in the assault, the department said, referring to toys styled to look like guns that shoot small polymer water beads.

The arrested student is charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, police said.

The incident was tied to a “senior assassin” game; the victims were not participating in the game, police said.

Incidents connected to games of “senior assassin” prompted several warnings from local police departments last year. In the game — typically played by high school seniors — players are given a fellow participant to track and must use a water gun or something similar to eliminate their target from the game, police said.

“’Senior assassin’ is not affiliated with or approved by local school districts and typically occurs off school grounds and after school hours,” the Lawrence Police Department said. “The Lawrence Police Department continues to work closely with local school officials to ensure the safety of students and the community and remind all families and students that while these activities may seem harmless, they can create dangerous situations and lead to serious consequences.”
