Caring for Japan’s rapidly growing older population requires facilities that provide not only medical support but also a dignified, safe and trusted home environment for residents. As Japan continues to age, families increasingly rely on nursing homes to ensure their loved ones receive high‑quality, compassionate long‑term care.
Choosing the right facility can be challenging. As of 2023, Japan had approximately 28,450 nursing homes, including special elderly nursing homes, illustrating the vast scale of the country’s long‑term care system. National bed capacity reached about 562,000 beds, operating at an 85% utilization rate, underscoring the significant demand for long‑term care services across the country.
This is why Newsweek and Statista are proud to launch Japan’s Best Nursing Homes 2026, marking the first year of this survey. Our goal is to bring clarity, transparency and recognition to facilities providing exceptional care throughout Japan.
This inaugural edition aims to deliver the same rigorous, data‑driven evaluation that defines our international rankings—supporting families in making informed decisions and highlighting excellence across Japan’s long‑term care landscape.
