The college football coaching landscape shifted significantly this past season, with much drama surrounding Lane Kiffin as he became the new head coach at LSU, leaving the Ole Miss Rebels before their College Football Playoff began.
Kiffin successfully guided the Rebels to a playoff-worthy season, but will now watch from afar as Pete Golding takes over as the new head coach. Golding and Ole Miss play the Tulane Green Wave in the first round on Saturday.
Despite the drama, Kiffin is doing his best to mend any issues that may have arisen. Ahead of the big game, he sent out a message on X (formerly Twitter) to call out drama between two parties.

Kiffin also seemed to suggest he’d still be rooting for his former squad throughout the season, with one exception.
In his X message, Kiffin wrote, “Its not the hunger games guys. Let’s both cheer for each other all year long except when we play each other. @LSUfootball @OleMissFB.”
Kiffin’s X post included a GIF from the movie “Step Brothers” in which Will Ferrell’s character, Brennan, asks his stepbrother Dale (John C. Reilly), “Did we just become best friends?”
What makes Kiffin’s message extra spicy is that he called out an X exchange between Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves regarding LSU and Ole Miss.
Reeves fired off a message to Landy in which he said, “The #1 football team in Louisiana – and the only one to ever make the 12 team College Football Playoff – plays in Mississippi tomorrow afternoon!! You don’t have to wait until next year to visit Oxford.”
However, Landry hit back at Reeves with “enjoy today with the team our coach built. See ya next year when you have to build your own.”
That prompted Kiffin to step in to try to settle down the drama that he stirred up with his significant coaching move during the college football season.
Following his decision to become the new LSU coach, he was shut down from coaching his former Ole Miss team in the CFP. Kiffin’s offensive coordinator, Charlie Weis Jr., was allowed to return for playcalling to assist Golding from the sidelines, but will rejoin Kiffin as part of his LSU coaching staff after the CFP.
Ole Miss looks to advance to the second round of the CFP with a win over Tulane, with game time scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday. Some will still contend that Kiffin is responsible for assembling this team amid any success in the CFP, although he’s no longer at the helm.
