The Royal Bahamas Police Force said a man has been arrested on Wednesday in connection to Lynette Hooker’s disappearance at sea.
“Police wish to inform the public that, as the investigation continues, a 59-year-old male of U.S. nationality was taken into custody shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 8th, April 2026, in Marsh Harbour, Abaco. He is currently being questioned in connection with this matter.”
Authorities did not immediately identify the man in custody or announce if any charges have been filed. USA Today reported that the man is Brian Hooker, Lynette’s husband, along with Reuters.
Newsweek reached out to the Royal Bahamas Police Force via email on Wednesday night for comment.
What To Know
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said Brian Hooker reported that the Michigan couple departed Hope Town on Saturday night in an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy bound for Elbow Cay when his wife fell overboard with the boat’s key, shutting off the engine, and strong currents carried her away, numerous outlets reported.
Police said the husband paddled the disabled dinghy and reached Marsh Harbour Boat Yard around 4 a.m. Sunday, where a person he informed alerted authorities.
Advardo Dames of the Royal Bahamas Police told Reuters, “We took him into custody around 7:30 p.m. this evening in Abaco for additional questioning based on some probable cause we have,” adding, “He’s been taken into custody as a suspect. He’s been arrested,” in a phone interview, per the news service’s report.
What People Are Saying
Brian Hooker wrote on Facebook on Wednesday in part: “I am heartbroken over the recent boat accident in unpredictable seas and high winds that caused my beloved Lynette to fall from our small dinghy near Elbow Cay in the Bahamas. Despite desperate attempts to reach her, the winds and currents drove us further apart. We continue to search for her and that is my sole focus.”
“Thank you to everyone for keeping Lynette in your thoughts and for your support of our family during this difficult time,” he added.
Lynette Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, to CBS News this week in part: “Brian’s always driving. So he basically is in charge of the key. So the fact that my mom had it doesn’t make any sense.”
What Happens Next
It is immediately unclear if Brian Hooker will be charged as the investigation continues. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact local law enforcement or Crime Stoppers while operations remain active.
