The discovery of an unidentified and unattended object forced the closure of the main gate at Camp Pendleton Friday along with several nearby freeway connectors.
The security measures at the northern San Diego-area military installation went into effect about 5 a.m., according to base officials.
As a precaution, the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramps to Harbor Drive and Vandegrift Boulevard were also shut down.
The closures remained in effect at midday.
Marine Corps officials did not release details on the nature of the object that prompted the shutdowns.
