This is a classic “two truths” situation.
Mike Tirico is a legendary sports broadcaster, but he also made a hilariously bad mistake during NBC and Peacock‘s broadcast of Game 5 between the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.
Just before halftime, the camera panned to “Celebrity Row,” with the likes of Timothée Chalamet, Kylie Jenner, Ben Stiller, Tina Fey, and Tracy Morgan.
“Sometimes you say ‘Celebrity Row’ in a game, and it’s one or two people,” Tirico said. “This is an entire Celebrity Row. Chalamet, Tina Fox, Tracy Morgan.”
The hilarious part is how confidently Tirico misidentified Fey — a “Saturday Night Live” legend, ubiquitous pop culture staple, and 10-time Emmy winner — as Tina Fox.
The Knicks put on a show for everyone at MSG, including the fictitious Tina Fox, to beat the Hawks 126-97 and take a 3-2 lead over Atlanta in their first-round NBA playoffs series. Knicks All-Star point guard went off for 39 points on 15-of-23 shooting from the floor.
Stiller was live-tweeting while seated courtside, like the die-hard fan he is, including his customary “got it done” after the Knicks sealed the win.
Unfortunately, Fey does not have any social media accounts, so we’ve been robbed of her what would surely have been a perfect response to Tirico’s blunder. Consider this my public plea to Tina Fey to take this opportunity to write a character named Tina Fox.
The Knicks will have an opportunity to close out the Hawks in Atlanta if they win Game 6 on Thursday night. If not, Game 7 will be back at the Garden, and Celebrity Row will resume as the gift that keeps on giving.
The winner of this series will face either the Boston Celtics or Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Celtics lead the 76ers 3-2.
