A mother’s pride in her young daughter’s long blond hair turned into a moment of shock after the 3.5-year-old decided to experiment with scissors.
The parent and original poster (OP), user StunningCheesecake87, shared before-and-after photos in a Reddit post, explaining that her child had cut off a large section of her own hair.
The post shows the child’s hair once hanging straight down her back in what the mom described as “liquid gold,” followed by a second photo in which the length is uneven and dramatically shorter after the self-inflicted trim.
“I know it’s one of those things, but I’m still sad about it,” the OP wrote. “Sharing for solidarity and reassurance more than anything. Her hair was like liquid gold!
“Emergency hairdresser today!”
Reddit users flocked to the comments to weigh in, with one recalling a near-chain reaction in a classroom after their child attempted a DIY hairstyle.
“My rather impulsive daughter gave herself bangs in kindergarten, while at school (she has very curly hair and a tiny forehead, so it looked ridiculous),” they wrote.
“Even worse, she inadvertently started a trend with the other kindergarten girls, who all managed to get hold of those blunt little kid scissors and butcher their own hair later that day, before the teachers caught on.”
‘Wouldn’t look bad’
The same commenter encouraged the OP to take comfort in the temporary nature of the situation: “All this to say that you will laugh at this one day in the near future, and her beautiful hair will grow back before you know it!”
Another commenter offered a practical suggestion for repairing the style: “I mean, lowkey I feel like it wouldn’t look bad if you asked them to do like a graduated bob!”
Haircut mishaps like this are a familiar experience for many families with toddlers and preschoolers. Curiosity and experimentation often play a role in why young children decide to cut their own hair.
Ana Aznar, founder of REC Parenting, told Newsweek that preschoolers often act like investigators when they experiment with things like scissors.
“Preschoolers are little scientists, constantly investigating cause and effect—for example, ‘What happens if I cut my hair?’, ‘How would I look?’, or ‘How would my mom react?’” Aznar said.
Keep Calm and Carry On
Parenting educators say the key response is staying calm while explaining the limits around scissors. One parent writing about a similar incident on Cloud Montessori described pausing before reacting after noticing a missing chunk of hair.
“Oh! What a surprise. Now I understand what you were doing in your bedroom,” the parent recalled saying after discovering the cut.
The writer explained that the conversation continued later at home in a quieter moment, telling their child, “I am thinking about your hair and want you to know that it is never ok to use scissors in that way.”
For the OP behind the Reddit post, the next step was clear: a trip to the hairdresser.
While the “liquid gold” locks may be shorter for now, the responses suggest many parents see these moments as part of growing up, and a story that will likely become a family memory.
