The Bears picked LSU wide receiver Zavion Thomas —a distant relative of legendary running back Walter Payton — with the 89th pick Friday night.
The 22-year-old started his college career as a punt returner at Mississippi State before transferring to LSU after two years. The Louisiana native had 41 catches for 488 yards last year, threatening opponents with exquisite speed.
He’ll join a Bears receiving room that boasts Rome Odunze and Luther Burden but few other proven players. Kalif Raymond is slotted to be the team’s third receiver, though he’s more valuable as a returner.
The Bears made Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman their first-round pick Thursday night. On Friday, they took Iowa center Logan Jones with Pick 57 and then traded No. 60 to the Titans for No. 69 and a fifth-rounder. At No. 69, the Bears drafted Stanford tight end Sam Roush.
The Bears hold picks in Rounds 4 and 5 and two in Round 7 on Saturday, the final day of the draft.
