Fire officials said that shortly after 12:30 a.m. they responded to reports of a fire at a large, three-story residential building that had been converted into multiple apartment and condominium units. Firefighters were able to quickly locate the fire and contain it to the room and apartment where it broke out.
One person in that apartment was carried out and taken to the hospital in critical condition. There were no other injuries.
The other units in the building are expected to remain habitable, fire officials said.
In a news release about the fire, officials reminded residents to install working smoke alarms in all sleeping areas and throughout the home and to “practice fire safety, especially during winter months when fire risk can increase.”
The news release said officials didn’t know yet whether the unit had working smoke alarms.
