A heartbreaking video showing a family singing “Happy Birthday” to their Great Dane just hours before saying goodbye has moved viewers across social media, with many admitting it left them in tears.
The clip, shared by Yeni Gomez of Dallas, Texas, has garnered 1.5 million views, capturing what Gomez described as one of the final moments her family spent with Duke, their beloved dog, who passed away just days short of his eighth birthday.
In the video, Duke sits calmly as a candle flickers on a cake in front of him. Gomez and her daughter are visibly sobbing, while her husband and son sing. Gomez said she couldn’t bring herself to join in.
“The video was taken a few hours before we had to take him to the vet,” she told Newsweek. “We began saying our goodbyes the afternoon before but it didn’t feel like enough. I wanted us to celebrate his birthday one last time and I couldn’t get myself to sing.”
She said those moments became some of the last memories the family would share together.
Gomez explained that Duke joined their family after she spotted him on a Great Dane Facebook page. “The owner said her dogs had an unexpected litter and they were looking at selling or rehoming the puppies,” she said. “He was one of three left and immediately stood out. We picked him up at eight weeks.”
Duke lived just shy of his eighth birthday, which the family chose to celebrate early. “He lived a few days short from turning eight, so we celebrated him early,” Gomez said. “He will always be eight in our eyes.”
Like many Great Danes, Duke ruled the household, Gomez joked. “Duke, like many Danes, owned the home. We—the humans—just paid the bills and had the honor of living there,” she said. She described him as stubborn, loving, and fiercely loyal. “He was a complete goofball who was scared of his own shadow but meant business when it came down to protecting us from the mailman or neighborhood squirrels.”
Daily naps and cuddles were non‑negotiable, she added, with Duke rotating between family members throughout the day. “He was the definition of what a best friend should be. Duke was such a good boy,” she said.
Since his passing, the family has continued to share memories and photos of Duke that had never been posted before. Gomez recalled one image from a week when Duke became unusually clingy, later discovering she was pregnant that same day. “Duke knew before I did,” she said. “He was already bonding with our now two‑month‑old.”
Social media users flooded the comments with emotional reactions. “I cry on this app EVERYDAY,” one viewer wrote. Another shared, “So glad my baby waited until she turned 15 and I bought her a quinceañera dress.” Others added simply, “I’m sad now,” and, “He looks like such a gentle giant, sweet baby.”
Gomez said she hopes Duke’s story encourages others not to shy away from the breed despite its shorter lifespan. “If anyone is on the fence about getting a Dane, just do it,” she said. “The lifespan might not be long, but they’re worth it.”
She added one final warning for prospective owners: “Be patient, go ahead and upgrade to a king‑size bed, and get ready to wipe slobber off every corner of the house.”
