NFL Media reported that Jim Schwartz informed the Cleveland Browns on Friday that he was resigning after the team named Todd Monken as the head coach.

Schwartz wanted the head coaching job and became “visibly upset” when he learned Monken got the job.
Cleveland is expected to block any team looking to hire Schwartz as a defensive coordinator this offseason. The coach is under contract for one more season with the Browns, who hold an option on his contract for 2027.

Still, there is a possibility that the talented defensive mind could take a job with the Las Vegas Raiders. After the Super Bowl on Sunday, the Raiders are expected to name Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak as their head coach.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk thinks the Raiders have a possibility to hire Schwartz as their defensive coordinator. While the NFL does not allow teams to trade assistant coaches (the league permits teams to trade head coaches), the Browns could effectively trade Schwartz by burying the agreement in another trade package in March.
“It’s possible that the Raiders and Browns could informally work out some other tentative trade involving players and/or draft picks, to be effective when the league year begins on March 11,” Florio wrote. “Extra compensation for Schwartz could be buried into that transaction.
“Then, the Browns — in an apparent display of magnanimity — would release Schwartz from his remaining contractual obligations. So it’s over. Unless it isn’t. And things could get interesting if/when Kubiak becomes the new head coach of the Raiders and if/when the Raiders try to find a way to get Schwartz to Las Vegas.”
While the Browns would rather have Schwartz on their sideline next season, the team may as well try to get something for the coach that no longer wants anything to do with Cleveland.
