Nearly one in two Republicans disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling the cost of living, a new poll suggests.
The new AP-NORC poll, conducted April 16 – 20, found 47 percent of Republicans surveyed disapproved of Trump’s performance on affordability, while 51 percent approved. Among all voters surveyed, 23 percent approved and 76 disapproved.
The poll was the first by AP-NORC—a collaborative between the Associated Press and the University of Chicago—this year to include cost-of-living approval ratings, and comes as the Iran war put pressure on American gas prices.
Trump’s approval rating on the economy dropped to 30 percent in April from 38 percent in a March AP-NORC poll. A similarly low share of U.S. adults, 32%, approve of the president’s leadership on Iran, which is unchanged since last month.
The findings could spell trouble for the GOP as it tries to defend slim House and Senate majorities in the November’s midterm elections. Losing either could allow Democrats to stiffle parts of Trump’s agenda.
This is a developing story. More to follow.
