A tractor-trailer caught fire early Friday on southbound Interstate 5 in the Encinitas area, prompting extended lane closures as crews worked to clear debris.
The fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. near the Birmingham Drive off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officials said the driver pulled over after the trailer caught fire.
The No. 3 and 4 lanes of southbound I-5, along with the Birmingham Drive off-ramp, remain closed. Southbound traffic is heavily congested from Poinsettia Lane to Birmingham Drive, CHP said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Caltrans and CHP crews are continuing cleanup efforts at the scene.
