The Olympic Winter Games in Milan-Cortina, Italy, are set to begin Friday, Feb. 6, and one of the main storylines just under a week out is the status of U.S. female alpine skier and global superstar Lindsey Vonn, who suffered a scary knee injury during a crash in the downhill race in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
Vonn, 41, crashed directly into the netting and remained there for several minutes, favoring her left leg before eventually being airlifted from the course.
She later provided an update, making it clear that her Olympic dream is not over, even though her participation next week remains uncertain.
“I crashed today in the downhill race in Switzerland and injured my left knee. I am discussing the situation with my doctors and team and will continue to undergo further exams,” she wrote on Instagram. “This is a very difficult outcome one week before the Olympics… but if there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s make a comeback.
“My Olympic dream is not over,” she continued. “It’s not over until it’s over…”

Many popular figures reacted to Vonn’s public statement, but one that stood out came from fellow Olympic champion Simone Biles, a seven-time gold medalist.
Biles commented on Vonn’s Instagram post, writing, “sending love babes” with three heart emojis, showing support for a fellow U.S. Olympian who has cemented her legacy as one of the all-time greats in her sport.
On Saturday, a day after the crash, Vonn was forced to withdraw from her scheduled World Cup super-G race at the same venue.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to race today… wishing all my teammates a great race,” Vonn posted Saturday. “Thank you for all of the love and support I have received. Means the world to me. Doing my best right now.”
The 2010 Olympic gold medalist will likely need to be ready by Sunday, Feb. 8, when the Olympic women’s downhill takes place at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
