Snoop Dogg teases his upcoming biopic with star Jonathan Daviss at CinemaCon and reveals when the first trailer drops

Universal Pictures started their presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas with a bang, bringing out Snoop Dogg to promote his upcoming and untitled biopic.

The 54-year-old rapper – born Calvin Broadus Jr. – signed a first-look deal with Universal through his Death Row Pictures back in April 2025, with this biopic being the first project to come out of that deal.

Snoop Dogg also brought out actor Jonathan Daviss (Outer Banks), who was announced back in June 2025 to play the rapper in the biopic.

Snoop not only revealed when filming will begin, but also that he plans to return to the Las Vegas convention next year, to unveil the first footage.

“I wish I could give you more details,” Snoop said (via Deadline), before revealing that filming is set to begin this summer in Los Angeles.

“We’ll be back at CinemaCon next year with a trailer,” Snoop teased, before breaking into his hit songs “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Gin N Juice.”

He also brought on Daviss on to the stage for a brief appearance, adding how this follows in the footsteps of Universal’s 2015 hit biopic Straight Outta Compton, about the rise of N.W.A.

“After my brothers got to tell their story with Straight Outta Compton, now it’s my turn,” Snoop said about the film, which earned over $200 million worldwide.

“My director, Craig Brewer, he just showed us how hard it is out here for a pimp from Hustle & Flow. And then last year, he got us all singing ‘Sweet Caroline,’” he said, referring to last year’s Song Sung Blue.

He also added, “If we gonna do a Snoop Dogg movie, I gotta get gangster with it,” before he performed excerpts of two of his earliest hits with Dr. Dre: “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” and “Deep Cover.” (via THR).

Snoop also confirmed, “My movie is going to be rated R, I guarantee that. So get your parents’ permission.”

He was brandishing a Universal necklace, adding that he has some prime real estate on the Universal Pictures studio lot.

“I got a trailer on the lot right next to [Steven] Spielberg. There goes the mother-fu***ing neighborhood. They called the fire department on me two times already, but it wasn’t fire. Smoke, baby,” he joked.

Snoop also brought out Universal Pictures head Donna Langley by saying, “All hail the queen,” even giving her a matching necklace.

Langley – who has been at the top of Universal’s film department since 2013 – called Snoop’s biopic, “the spiritual cousin of Straight Outta Compton.”

The film – directed by Brewer and written by Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther) – will follow the rapper’s meteoric rise from the streets of Long Beach to fame and fortune.

He first appeared with Dr. Dre on the title track from the 1992 film Deep Cover‘s soundtrack, along with Dre’s solo debut The Chronic.

Snoop released his first album Doggystyle in 1993, which was certified 4x platinum and has sold over 9 million albums in the United States alone.

Snoop will also produce the biopic alongside Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker.
