South End candy shop reports being robbed at knifepoint

A popular South End Swedish candy store was robbed at knifepoint Tuesday, police and the business said.

“At the end of the day, we are not going to let this loser man’s actions ruin the vibe of our happy place,” Madeleine’s Candy Shop, located on Clarendon Street in the South End, said in a social media post.

At around 7:30 p.m., a “white or light-skinned Hispanic” man wearing a maroon sweatshirt, gray sweatpants, and a gray beanie entered the candy shop, the Boston Police Department said.

The man wielded a knife and demanded money from an employee. He robbed the store for an “unknown amount of currency,” BPD said.

One woman was working at the time of the robbery. The employee was not physically harmed, the Swedish candy store said.

“I am heartbroken that she was put in that situation, but I am incredibly proud of how she handled it—she stayed calm, followed her instincts, and kept herself safe,” Madeleine’s said.

The candy store has 24/7 video surveillance footage, the business said.

The small business is not the only store that has been robbed this week, Madeleine’s said on social media.

On Sunday, Boston police responded to a business on Tremont Street and found a missing cash register, but were not immediately able to contact the business manager, a spokesperson for the department told Boston.com.

The department is investigating the Tremont Street incident as separate from the candy store robbery, the police spokesperson said.

“Last night wasn’t a financial loss—it was a violation of that sense of safety,” Madeleine’s said.
