Staff shocked by bonded pair in shelter—but all they have is each other

An unlikely friendship between a senior pit bull and a young cat has captured hearts online after they were surrendered together to a Chicago rescue following a sudden upheaval in their family life.

Bella, a 10-year-old pit bull, and Sabrina, a 2-year-old cat, arrived together at Famous Fido Rescue after their elderly guardian was abruptly moved into assisted living, leaving no one able to care for them. 

According to the rescue, the two animals have spent their entire lives together in the same home and were already deeply bonded by the time they were surrendered.

“Bella and Sabrina are not what most would expect when they think of a bonded pair,” the rescue wrote in a Facebook post that has thousands of likes and comments. “One is a pit bull, the other a cat, and yet their connection is undeniable.”

Gloria Lissner of Famous Fido Rescue said that keeping the animals together has been a priority from the moment they arrived.

“Bella is a 10-year-old pit bull and Sabrina is a 2-year-old cat, and they came to us as an already bonded pair from the same home,” Lissner told Newsweek. “Their bond is incredibly special and clearly longstanding. They find comfort in one another through all of this change, and so we have kept them housed together during this transition in their lives.”

At this stage, the pair is not available for adoption as their guardian actively fights to be reunited with them.

“The situation is being addressed through the court system, with a cognitive assessment pending,” Lissner said. “It’s a very emotional and uncertain process, and we are committed to caring for them while respecting that bond.”

Famous Fido Rescue said that if a court ultimately determines the guardian cannot resume care, the organization will begin looking for a home willing to adopt Bella and Sabrina together.

“Separating them would not be in their best interest,” Lissner added.

In the meantime, the rescue is covering all of the animals’ expenses, including food, housing, and medical care, while asking for community support to help sustain their work during the ongoing case.

“We stepped in so they would have a safe place to land during this incredibly difficult chapter,” the rescue said. “Their bond is something truly special, and it deserves to be honored no matter what the outcome may be.”

As the video of the unlikely duo gained more attention on Facebook, people shared their reactions in the comments. 

“If the owner is unable to care for them, I hope that whoever adopts them is able to arrange visits,” one Facebook user wrote. Another said: “Animals just want love. They don’t care about species.”

“This is a reminder to those of us getting older to make arrangements for our pets were something to happen to us!” another viewer said.
