Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr just wrapped up the final season of his current contract with the team, casting doubt upon his future with the organization.
The 12th season of Kerr’s Warriors coaching tenure ended with a loss to the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Play-In Tournament. Golden State finished the regular season with a 37-45 record, good for No. 10 position in the Western Conference.
Kerr sat down for a two-hour meeting with controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy on Monday, according to a report from ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania. The two sides still haven’t decided on the best path forward, and are expected to meet again sometime next week.
Both sides described the meeting as “productive,” according to Charania’s source.
“It’s April,” one source said. “We don’t need to rush.”
Kerr, 60, led the Warriors to four NBA championship titles. He’s long been the leader for aging stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, but Golden State could be looking toward a rebuild after yet another season with no playoff success.
Kerr acknowledged that his time may be coming to an end following the Warriors’ Play-In Tournament loss to the Suns.
“I still love coaching, but I get it,” Kerr said. “These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas.”
