A man was detained at an Elgin apartment complex after an hourslong standoff with federal agents Saturday that included clashes with protesters and several cans of tear gas deployed.
Protesters at the scene say the standoff began shortly before 10 a.m. at Maple Lane and Jane Drive when someone being chased by federal agents ran into a second-floor unit in an apartment complex and was pushed onto the balcony by residents inside.
Around 3 p.m., agents could be seen escorting the man from the second floor of the complex.
Several dozen protesters were in the neighborhood providing supplies to the man as he stayed on the balcony, witnesses said.
Several canisters of tear gas were deployed by agents as some protesters threw snow and water bottles at agents.
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment.
