An animal shelter in Colorado has turned to social media in hopes of finding the longest dog resident a forever home after being in their care for more than 600 days.
The shelter dog, Nico, was brought to the Longmont Humane Society in Longmont, Colorado, after his previous owner was arrested and the dog was relinquished, Jordyn, the social media coordinator, told Newsweek via Instagram. She said he was raised to be a guard dog for a drug house, but the team is unsure for how long and what exactly he endured.
Despite his past, Nico quickly captured the hearts of those at the humane society. The animal shelter calls him “70 pounds of pure lap puppy.” At 4 years old, he has spent nearly half his life in the shelter waiting for his forever home, and Jordyn knows the team has their work cut out for them because Nico needs to be adopted into a home with no other pets, and he cannot live with children.
“Nico gets a lot of interest, but that hurdle is a really big one to get over, and it takes a special type of family to be a good fit for him,” she said.
In the November 26 Instagram video on the humane society’s account, @longmonthumanesocietyofficial, Nico sat in front of a sign, which gave him the heartbreaking title of longest resident. Part of the sign read: “I just need someone to give me a chance.”
He looked up to the camera with eyes full of sadness. It’s as if he has given up hope. But the team is confident Nico’s forever home is coming soon.
“Him getting interest proves that it’s not a matter of if, but when,” Jordyn said.
To draw attention, the rest of the clip showcased Nico’s goofy yet gentle personality in hopes of attracting his future family. His bark might be intimidating at first, but he’s a sweetheart once he trusts you. He loves to snuggle, quiet time and showing how well he walks on the leash.
Longmont Humane Society is willing to adopt to someone out of state, but travel would have to be arranged by the adopter, as they do not have the capability for transport.
Viewer Reactions
Nico’s squishy face instantly melted hearts, and as of Monday, the Instagram video had reached more than 841,000 views, 48,000 likes and 971 comments.
“Someone please give him a loving home. Please adopt him soon,” begged a viewer.
A second person commented: “He is so special, unique and precious. I hope he gets a forever, loving, happy and peaceful home full of adventures and joy.”
A third user said: “I know Nico is a good boy, just like me – I got adopted on my 600th day, so someone is out there for him too!”
