President Donald Trump has said that he was “disappointed” that his Ukrainian counterpart, President Volodymyr Zelensky, had not read the U.S. peace plan to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
In comments that followed discussions in Florida between Trump’s envoys and Ukrainian officials, the U.S. president also said that Russia was “fine” with a peace plan proposed by the U.S.
As of Monday morning, Zelensky had not commented on Trump’s claim and Newsweek has contacted the Ukrainian president’s office for comment.
Why It Matters
Trump’s comments follow a meeting between Ukrainian officials with U.S. negotiators in Florida where Zelensky’s chief negotiator pushed for changes to a White House peace plan widely considered favorable to Russia.
Both sides have said there was progress, but Trump’s claim suggested he was unhappy with Zelensky’s approach, adding to uncertainty over whether a deal to end the war was imminent, nearly three years after Russia invaded its neighbor.
What To Know
Trump was speaking following talks in Florida between Rustem Umerov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, and Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
This followed talks between Witkoff, Kushner and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
Trump told reporters in Washington at the Kennedy Center on Sunday that Zelensky’s people who held talks in Florida “love” the U.S. peace plan and that “Russia’s fine with it.”
Trump then said: “I’m not sure that Zelensky is fine with it.” The Ukrainian president had previously rejected proposals that would force Ukraine to hand over territory to Russia and limit its military.
Trump added that he was “disappointed” Zelensky had not read the proposals “as of a few hours ago,” although there is no independent confirmation of this.
The Ukrainian president said Monday there had been “substantive discussions” between Kyiv and Trump’s envoys. Zelensky also said in a social media post that “Ukraine deserves a dignified peace, and whether there will be peace depends entirely on Russia.”
What People Are Saying
President Donald Trump said on Sunday: “I’m a little bit disappointed that President Zelensky hasn’t yet read the proposal. That was as of a few hours ago.”
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said on X: “Ukraine deserves a dignified peace, and whether there will be peace depends entirely on Russia—on our collective pressure on Russia and on the sound negotiating positions of the United States, Europe, and all our other partners.”
What Happens Next
Trump’s envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said Saturday that a peace agreement to end Russia’s war was nearing completion, although Kyiv’s comments do not appear to show that any deal was imminent. Meanwhile, Zelensky will meet European leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz U.K Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Monday.
