It’s not looking good for Marvel fans expecting a Kingpin cameo in “Avengers: Doomsday.”
Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays the vicious villain in Disney Plus series “Daredevil: Born Again,” managed expectations he’s joining the sizable cast.
“Right now, they don’t have the rights,” D’Onofrio told GQ. “They have a bit more rights than they did a couple of years ago, but it’s tough right now. They have the rights to a lot of characters from the Spider-Man series but they don’t have mine, not completely. So I think that’s holding them back a bit. But I hope to be able to do it, we’ll see.”
Like many characters from across Marvel’s massive roster, simply putting Kingpin in a film isn’t straightforward, and this is preventing him from joining what could be the biggest Marvel movie ever. However, it’s not the first time Marvel has managed to find a way of bringing in fan-favorite characters.
In “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Marvel included two previous Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, despite complicated licensing agreements. D’Onofrio himself remains hopeful of one day making a big screen debut.
“I hope Kingpin is in the movies someday,” he said. “We’ll see, I don’t know. Maybe it will be me, maybe it won’t.” Whatever movie Kingpin might appear in, it won’t be “Avengers: Doomsday.”
The film has already finished shooting, and releases Dec. 18, 2026. His next opportunity comes in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which is due out December 2027.
One huge asset D’Onofrio has on his side is Marvel president Kevin Feige, who is apparently a massive “Daredevil” fan.
“I know this for a fact now because I know Kevin a little bit,” D’Onofrio added. “He’s very into Daredevil. And I always thought if they’re into Marvel characters, these are some cool Marvel characters. That’s why we’re back. That’s why I thought we’d be back and eventually we were.”
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Release Date
