Brazilian influencer and triathlete Mara Flávia died while competing in the Ironman triathlon in Texas over the weekend.
Law enforcement in Montgomery County confirmed that a participant in the triathlon drowned while participating in the swim portion of the event on Saturday in a press release. Brazilian media outlet G1 identified Flávia as the athlete who died during the triathlon.
Who Was Mara Flávia?
Flávia was a well-known influencer with more than 61,000 followers on Instagram. Her sister Melissa Araújo told G1 she had been participating in triathlons for about 10 years and had competed in the Ironman triathlon several times.
She frequently posted about her athletic experiences to Instagram.
She discussed running in Kona, Hawaii, in an October 2023 post, writing, “Yet I will continue to laugh at my difficulties, shattering hypocrisy to the mountains. I will not deprive myself of.. my laughs, in my simple way of being, I do not want to please the bitter ego of those who do not know the true essence of a smile, and of our sport.”
In one of her most recent posts, she shared an image of her sitting by a pool ahead of the triathlon, captioned, “One more day of work!”
G1 reported she worked in media and communications in São Paulo where she was diagnosed with an unspecified health problem and began to invest time into becoming a triathlete.
