When Annette Bammert met Lenny the cat, he had developed the reputation of being the “saddest cat in the shelter.” But now she has shared his remarkable transformation from mournful to living his best life.
Bammert took in a black-and-white cat named Lenny shortly after Christmas, following the loss of her beloved senior cat, Wilma.
In a video shared on Instagram that has racked up more than 175,000 views, Bammert documented Lenny’s journey from withdrawn and heartbroken to confident, playful and affectionate—now fully settled into his forever home.
“I first saw Lenny’s picture on the website of an animal shelter near us,” Bammert told Newsweek. “Shortly before Christmas [last year], we had to put our beloved cat Wilma to sleep because she was very old and ill. Lenny simply looked as sad as I felt at that moment.”
When she first visited the shelter, Bammert wasn’t allowed to meet Lenny in person. Instead, she could only see him through a glass door.
His brother had already been adopted, leaving Lenny alone in a separate room because he didn’t get along with other cats.
“He really did look sad,” she said. “Of course, that might also be because of the black spots around his eyes, but his gaze almost broke my heart.”
Without hesitation, Bammert returned to the shelter after Christmas and brought him home. Now nearly a year later, Lenny—around a year-and-a-half old—has blossomed.
“At the beginning, it wasn’t always easy,” Bammert said. “We don’t know what he had already been through in his short life, but at first, he hid most of the time for days and wouldn’t let anyone touch him.”
But, with time, consistency and patience, everything changed.
“Now he’s the bravest little tomcat I know,” Bammert said. “The first time he was allowed outside, he climbed the tallest trees right away. He’s wild and playful, but he also keeps seeking our closeness again and again.”
The transformation is visible not just in his behavior—but also in his face—as Lenny has truly settled into new home and is no longer a sad cat.
“Seeing how even his expression has changed is the most wonderful thing,” Bammert said.
