One member of the “WWE SmackDown” brand has gotten some high marks from important figures behind the scenes. Carmelo Hayes has seen his popularity grow on the main roster. Fans have been clamoring for the former NXT Champion to be given a breakout moment on the blue brand, and WWE officials have been paying attention.
WrestleVotes on Fightful Select reports that several people backstage have high hopes for Hayes’ professional wrestling future. He is also said to be well-liked among his peers and higher-ups. WWE has already taped Friday’s edition of “SmackDown,” and Hayes is set to play a big role on the show.

During the final taping of “SmackDown” for 2025, Ilja Dragunov held another WWE United States Championship open challenge. Hayes answered the call and hit Nothing But Net to secure the pinfall. After the match, Hayes and Dragunov embraced. Hayes is the new WWE United States Champion going into 2026.
It’s the first main roster title win for Hayes. He had been unsuccessful in his bid to capture the gold in his previous attempt thanks to interference from Tommaso Ciampa. Whether or not Hayes will continue the open challenges in his run as the WWE United States Champion remains to be seen. It’s possible that Hayes’ beef with Ciampa isn’t done, as the two have yet to settle their differences in singles action.
