The New York Yankees were reportedly interested in bringing in Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins, but they whiffed on him. The Chicago Cubs reportedly agreed to a trade to acquire Cabrera earlier this week.
As a result, the Yankees have been left to turn their attention to the other top trade chips, including Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. But the Yankees’ pursuit of Skubal didn’t seem to last very long.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported the Yankees had called the Tigers about a trade for Skubal, but the asking price was much higher than they were expecting. As a result, it seems like the Yankees are out.
“After coming up short for Edward Cabrera, the Yankees are looking at trade targets Freddy Peralta and MacKenzie Gore,” Heyman wrote. “They checked in on Tigers superstar Tarik Skubal but got the impression it would take ‘half the team.’ Can’t really blame Detroit.”
A Skubal trade is very unlikely at this point. It seems like the Tigers are asking for a King’s Ransom and then some for Skubal, and it’s hard to blame them. The Yankees don’t have the organizational depth to realistically make a trade for Skubal without crippling their franchise and its future.
There are a few other pitchers the Yankees could pursue instead. It seems unlikely they’ll dive into free agency to add a pitcher, but the trade market would fit them very well.
