UCLA’s Alysa Liu helped the United States start the Milan Cortina Olympics on the right skate Friday with a strong showing in the team event women’s short program.
Liu’s score of 74.90 and a lifted the U.S. into the lead in the overall team event. Redondo Beach’s Madison Chock and Evan Bates finished first in rhythm dancing.
“I like performing, so I wish I could be back out there,” Liu said after her performance. “I don’t know if it’s relief. I need more. I need to do this all the time.
“There are some things I wish I could’ve done better, but I’m not going to be a Debbie Downer. I’m really happy.”
Competing in her second Olympics, the 20-year-old Liu and Team USA easily advanced with the team finals coming up Sunday.
Liu placed second behind three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto of Japan.
